Big Fuckin' Swords: A love story
« on: May 23, 2014, 09:15 PM »

Having spent a lot more time with the Warrior on live, here is my official beginning Warrior spec-list & guide.  This is intended to be less of a "you must do this" laundry list and more of a starting place for new warriors and a base to start discussion on build effectiveness and min/maxing warrior potential.  Please discuss.

PvE DPS

This is my bread-and-butter build.  I will be in this spec most of the time.  This spec brings high personal DPS, good group utility, 3 gap closers, and solid interrupt potential.

To open on any mob that will last more than a few seconds, you will want to use Ripsaw followed by 2-4 x Relentless Strikes.  The goal is to start dots ticking from Ripsaw and hit at least 500 Kinetic Energy ASAP.  I will typically shoot for the full 1,000 to give a KE decay buffer and for the damage increase off of Laceration, Kinetic Fury and Rampage.

Once you have finished the opener, you will generally settle into the following priority-based rotation:

If you need to run Smackdown for your group/raid, it can be used as a direct replacement for Ripsaw in both ability set and opener/rotation.

With the evntual amp and ability tier unlocks i'm looking forward to making the following modifications:
Amps:
  • Detonate - In my brief tinkering with this amp it has real solid damage potential in burst aoe situations.
  • Kinetic Drive - In situations where the mob is engaged early (like the first boss in KV) it provides an aggro-free way to build KE and with the Speed Burst boost to dash-sprint it makes an appealing alternative to Leap.
  • Crit Severity - This is always a good place to unload spare points for overall DPS improvement
Abilities:

Here are some additional common changes I make situationally:

Interrupt Armor CC Defense

The changes:
AMP: swap out of Speed Burst and into Kinetic Drive.
Ability: swap out Leap or Grapple for Unstopable Force

This utility build gives you a CC break and the ability to stack a 5s Interrupt armor to avoid things like Disarms and Stuns and generally makes mechanics easier.  The trade of is mobility.

This is a spec useful against "hard CC" and realted mechanics like escaping from the confusion Esper in Tempest or negating the disarm mechanic at the phase changes on first boss in STL.

Interrupter

The changes:
Swap all tier points out of Rampage and into Kick

By chaining Grapple and Kick you destroy 3 interrupt armor.  This allows every warrior to easily solo-stun a mob with 2 armor with decent reaction time.  Warriors are ideal at this role due to the low (<20s) reuse

This will be a significant dps drop over peak DPS, but when you need heavy interrupts, DPS usually isn't the issue.

Incredibly Useful in most upper level boss encounters.

Defensive Utility

The changes:
Drop Power Link and replace it with Defense Grid

If you are stacked in a group chock full of power link to the point where there is no downtime having an AOE 21% damage reduction is amazing.  This also free's up a great many options with the points from the Utility tree that are no longer required to obtain Power Link

PvP DPS

In my experience, the real strength of the Warrior in PvP is strong control.  Because of the strength of control in a PVP environment this leads to a very thinned out DPS rotation.  Much like in PVE, you want to maintain Ripsaw for the Dot and Snare and maintain KE with Relentless Strikes

For burst situations front-loading Augmented Blade, the Onslaught stance innate and a DPS trinket followed by Rampage is going to be catastrauphic amage to most anyone so long as you can keep them pinned.

Happiness is when you play a game so well that people call you a hacker.

There are two types of people in the world, those who can extrapolate from incomplete information.

I had some free time at work yesterday so I went ahead and completely re-wrote this guide with some updated thoughts and specs and had it moved over to the warrior board.  Please feel free to discuss or suggest additions and alterations.  Once the progression push slows a bit and I have some time to put towards tanking i'll do another one for tanks if no one else gets to it first.

I was finding it much better to use Tremor and Breaching strikes in pvp instead of keeping ripsaw in the LaS.

Yeah 2xtremor is in there too, I usually use it as a gap closer (or break away with teather bolt if I am mask running) unless they have their whole team stacked off the bat.  I agree that with the current spec ripsaw is probibly the weakest and most replaceable skill.

As an aside, if you want to expand the pvp section i'll update the op.

I just got back from a music festival, but if there is demand for a warrior tanking build (PvE that is) I can supply a few variants and a short guide explaining it over the next days.

I would like to point out how good Overwhelming Presence is for a raid group, and cross my fingers that one or two people will bite the bullet and take it so that everyone only has to get 3% strike-through off gear to cap out.

I will most probably be taking that, as my strikethrough is a mess and I really don't feel like wasting all of my rune slots on it. Plus I'm a tank so I can afford to spend points in utility.

Generally in a raid setting the warrior running Smackdown will also be running OP.
