Ubuntu 14.04
« on: Sep 27, 2014, 08:29 AM »
So I decided the way we manage our systems (switches, controllers, servers, file transfers) at work is shit. And i decided i wanted to make a simple Ubuntu server to run OPSView to help us keep track of our equipment. Here is the issue..... I do not know Ubuntu nor any Linux Kernel server OS. So my question guys.... does anyone know a good forum for a beginner to expert guide on 14.04 (this version will be supported for the next 4 years). Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I really don't know shit about Linux, Ubuntu, or OPSview but in cases like these I'd probably run a test environment first on a separate server for a few weeks, or a few months, which it looks like you're going to do. Depending on how large your network is, how many users, blah blah blah, you might want to take a look at which distros might be better suited for your company. (sustained technical support for 4 years, compatibility issues with other current software set-ups.)

So are you looking for a forum to just help you get set up or are you looking for suggestions on something else?

Well i should explain at where i am at.... So i am currently running VMWorkstation for a Ubuntu Server and Desktop which is what is how i am going to do my testing to get everything up and running and to work out all the bugs and what not. The biggest issue i am having is that most of the tools I am using is open source so the "google" searches all come back with a whole bunch of bullshit that i have to read through for hours on end to find some usable information.

That's the problem with Ubuntu. Not as many resources out there as windows.

Have share point or anything? If not I'm sure there are some free open source windows apps
