New Voice Communicator...?
« on: Dec 04, 2015, 06:56 PM »
I know a lot of people have approached me about using a new voice communicator. I would like to take a vote to see what people are interested in. Ideally, since LD50 is not playing a single game it really is just for hanging out. That would change if we are to unite under the LD50 banner for a new conquest in a different game.

I am open to ideas. Please feel free to leave your thoughts on the matter.

The other thing I forgot to mention is the integration with the website. As most of you know the information is shared between mumble and the LD50 website. I would have to talk to Ratio about the details but it is a feature I would like to ultimately keep.

I've been using Discord to communicate with my RL friends for about the past month or so, and it's been great.  Integration with our website is also something I'd like to keep because it's very convenient.  However, I like Discord well enough that I'd be willing to give that up.  I won't type a long-winded explanation or anything, but I will say that in my opinion Discord is the best communication client out there at the moment, and I hope others will agree and we can make it work.

For the text channels, we should have a Villichat and a Barrenschat :D

Not that I care at the moment...

The primary reason we chose mumble when we did was its incredibly low ingest to broadcast latency. Timing things had been a Big Dealâ„¢ in EQ2 and making sure that calls for what-the-fuck-ever arrived as on time as possible was important. It obviously was a non-issue in WS because of telegraphs.

If someone could measure ingest to broadcast to latency, I'd be interested, but it seems like the importance of that is  fading with more modern titles.

Most of the website integration stuff can be done from what I've glanced at:

http://discordapi.readthedocs.org/en/latest/index.html

But, the API isn't supported yet. (At least officially.) It seems like they leaked the API so that people could beta it in the wild, but they didn't "officially" release it so they didn't have to deal with support or complaints when they change things.

I'm probably not going to do any of that anytime soon. If someone else wants to... Let me know and I'll write the hooks to get the information you'd need from the website's database. But (and this is a big but), it would need to be coded abstractly because when they change things in the API (and they will) it needs to be easy to change the code without complete re-writes. (I don't really mind helping someone struggle through all of this, I just don't feel like doing it myself. :P )

I've heard that discord "sounds" better, but it uses the same codec mumble does (opus). (At least assuming someone isn't using a very old mumble client in which case mumble downgrades everyone to a shittier codec to support the old client.)

I also have some concerns about how they plan to make money. Selling skins and emojis doesn't sound very viable in the long term for server support. (The concern being that if they can't make enough money, they won't stick around, which leaves us in a lurch since they control the servers.)
Happiness is when you play a game so well that people call you a hacker.

There are two types of people in the world, those who can extrapolate from incomplete information.

I prefer mumble, but honestly our mumble has been choking and dying for a year.  if that can be resolved then, hey, great... but atm literally anything is better

Seems like Discord is the popular choice. I will set up a server this week and play around with the settings. I have been extremely busy lately but hopefully by this weekend we will make the swap officially.

Is it necessary or worth the trouble to switch right now?

Whats wrong with mumble while we just kinda hanging out in it?

If what you're saying takes longer than 3 seconds to say, expect everything past the first 3 seconds to get cut off, every time. (is what's wrong with Mumble atm)

Also, 99% of us are already on Discord on our temp server until Topi gets an official one set up.
