New Video Card
« on: Aug 16, 2014, 11:05 PM »
What you guys think the best bang for the buck video card is out there currently? I am looking to upgrade my SLI Nvidia GTX 570's.

GTX760 is basically the best price-performance ratio you can get at the moment.  If that's what you care about, go for that.  If you're okay with spending a bit more money, I would also recommend a 780.  I use a 670 and It still does way more than enough for all of today's games, so my personal recommendation goes to a 760.

SLI really doesn't scale with games that well at all. I have 2 770's SLI and i wished i would have just squeezed the trigger on one 780. (don't get me wrong i max our WS with 70FPS and it only gets better with more SLI profiles that come out for this game, but one card to give you better performance with no chance of stutter is the way to go.) And if its the cash just go with a refurbished from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487033 still has a 30 day return policy and a 1 year MFG warranty

Also one more thing a 570 is a decently older card if you don't mind me asking what CPU are you using.... it would be a waste of money if you hit some bottleneck....

The new Nvidia 800's are rumored to soft launch in mid september, definitely hold out until then.  They are supposed to be hitting at slightly more reasonable prices, and worst case the last gen will be on perma sales around that time.  I would pass on the 770(unless SLI'ed like Placker), it's just a rebadged 680, and a bit long in the tooth now in my opinion relative to your other options.  I got a GTX 780 Classified on sale a couple months ago that I have no complaints with, but let's see what the 870 and 880 offer.  Ideally the 780 TI will drop significantly but that is probably a pipe dream.  It's really just how future proofed do you want to be, and do you want the option to upgrade monitors to a much higher resolution during the lifespan of the card.

Honestly. I am only really looking at spending around $300. I would like to get a 780 but I can't warrant the price when it doesn't seem to be a vast improvement over the 770.

2 gig on a video card doesnt go far!  Even 3 can bottle neck a good performing machine.  I was running 2 780's sli set up but lucky me i got a hold of 2 titans and now have them.......drool!

1 780 can handle most everything out there right now i only saw performance issues with a couple first person shooters but then again i had everything turned up on stupid as its the only way i like to play. I sli another in to fix the bogging and found that was more than enough to fix those issues but then again i went even more stupid with dual titans!

The VRAM on a video card is dependent on what resolution is your display and how big is your display, Also if you plan on using Anti-aliasing and at what rate. honestly with Anti-Alaiasing on x8 on a 23inch display at 1920x1080  I never see more then 1.5gb used. (and with SLI just because you get 2gb cards does not mean you have 4gb at your disposal since SLI works in a alternating rendering set up, which means one card renders x frame then the other renders y frame and so on. So you still only have 2gb to render your graphics for any given frame) best bet is download GPU-Z and see how much GDDR your current settings are pulling from your gfx card. Last time i checked key things to look for when picking a gfx card are TMU (texture mapping units), memory bus, texture rate, and memory bandwidth. gpuboss.com great tool for comparing cards (models)
