New PC Build - Pics Coming Soon!
« on: Jul 06, 2012, 05:48 PM »
So.. it's been a few years since I built myself a new PC. The machine that I've been using has been pretty solid for the past couple years (dual GTX-460's in SLI with a sandy bridge i7 @ 3.07ghz) and there's really nothing wrong with it, but my brother is moving across the country to Arizona, so we built him a PC since he didn't have one, and building that one gave me a serious itch to build a new one for myself. My main rig now will transition to a bedroom PC when I finish the build.

All parts have been ordered, and some have started arriving. I'm hoping to have the PC built by the end of next week, and I plan to take pictures during the build process which I will post.

Part List:
Case - Coolermaster HAF-X Full Tower
Processor - Intel Ivy Bridge i7 3770k 3.5ghz (will be overclocking)
Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth Z77 TUF Series LGA 1155
Graphics - EVGA nVidia GTX 670 FTW Edition 2gb GDDR5 (4-way SLI ready, but after my experience with the 2x GTX-460 I have running SLI currently, I don't think I will be doing SLI again)
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4x8GB) @1600MHz (32gb is definitely overkill, but RAM is so cheap now I figured I'd go ahead and future-proof as much as possible)
Primary Hard Drives for OS & Programs - Samsung 830-Series 256gb SSD (x 2)  (configured in Raid 0 for performance)
Secondary Hard Drives for Storage - Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200rpm HDD (x2) (configured in Raid 0 separately from SSD's)
Optical Drive - Samsung Blu-Ray Combo Internal w/ DVD-Writable Drive
Power Supply - Corsair AX1200 Professional Series Gold 1200-Watt Power Supply
CPU Cooling - Corsair Hydro Series H100 Liquid CPU Cooler (maintenance free)

I have been running a dual monitor setup with 2 23" Samsung LED monitors. Temporarily, I will continue to use these with the new machine, and I'll hook my current computer up to a 32" TV I have in my bedroom. Eventually, though, I want to get a couple of 3D monitors and try out some 3D gaming. I'm not a huge fan of 3D in the theaters, but the idea of 3D gaming seems cool, and the graphics card I'll be using is ready for it, so that will probably be the next step in the process.

I also have not yet decided if I am going to purchase a separate sound card of any kind.. The motherboard has pretty good on-board HD sound, so I don't think it is necessary and I probably won't, but if anyone has any thoughts on that, I'd be happy to hear them.

I am also considering customizing the HAF-X case over the weekend. It is a pretty intimidating project, as I have never done any kind of custom paint job on a case before. It'll involve a lot of sanding and re-sanding to get it to look good... I'll make that decision by the end of the day today because I'll need to go buy supplies to do it. I'd like to have the custom look, but I don't want to screw it up. If anyone has ever customized a case in this way, any tips would be much appreciated!

To address a couple of things that I get asked by friends pretty often:

- That's an expensive PC Build, you rich?

No. This is a hobby for me, and I build a new PC once every few years (last one was about 2-1/2 years ago, before that about 6 years ago).. I don't smoke (cigs or weed), I don't eat out often, I don't go to bars frequently, and when I do, I drink cheap beer, and my 1999 Toyota Corolla is paid for. Lots of the places other people put their money, I don't have to, so I can buy toys like this. Do I need a PC this expensive? NO. Could I spend the money better somewhere else? Probably... But I enjoy this kind of stuff, and I'm excited to see how this machine will run all the newest games.

- Why so much storage? That's almost 7TB!

My current machine has roughly 12 TB of combined storage and stays pretty close to full. We have a little HTPC in our main TV/theater room area, and we love to watch movies. We stream a lot of movies from my PC to that room. It's a good TV and sound system, so any movies that we have on the computer are either full blu-ray rips (45-50gb per movie) or at least good quality 1080p versions (10-20gb per movie) and I like to keep the movies cataloged and on the computer for future viewing. Storage isn't too expensive, so I don't tend to delete a lot of the stuff that we rip and/or download.

Other than your case choice I'm extremely jealous and 32gb isn't definitely overkill.. it's definitely definitely definitely overkill.

What case would you have used? I had a roommate build a PC recently using the HAF-X and it's pretty sweet. I did a lot of research and it looked like the best option. It's a bit big, but I like having extra breathing room.

Well that's my exact point the size is what kills it for me however don't get me wrong I love CM but the X is just a fucking monster... I used to use a 932 and anything larger than that I would consider just crazy. I'm actually using a 912 Advanced right now and I think it's the perfect size but since you're going with the h100 you're pretty much forced to get a case that size which is unfortunate also the dual rad will require monthly dusting! =P

Don't raid 0's your storage.  There is no need.  If anything do a raid 1.  All of the cases you guys have been talking about are fine and $20 difference when you are spending that much doesn't really matter.

Uhh I doubt anyone is worried about the price difference Scott we're talking about size.. Also doing anything other than raid 0 on the SSD's would be mind blowingly pointless.

I think he is probably talking about the 2 3TB drives not the 2 SSD's.. The thing is, this is just a gaming and entertainment rig. In the rare case that I have a file on there that's really important, I would back it up on external HD anyway, so I really am not concerned about data security at all. Raid 0 on storage may not make a night and day difference like it will for programs on my SSD's, but it will make some difference, and this build is all about maximum performance within the realm of my possibility.

If it is truly just storage it will make no difference in what you are using it for.

And if you have room in your place for a full tower 932, then you have room for a HAF-X.  It is beastly, I agree, but if it's his preference /shrug.

And as he stated I was talking his storage array not his OS/program array.

I am very confused as to why you need 6TB data that isn't even used for storage (which would be your external HD)..??

I dunno man.. you seem to be going all out on this thing and if you aren't gonna use the 6TB as storage you may aswell downgrade a little bit, surely?

That PC is a beast though, I haven't heard of anyone ever building something like that! lol
It beats my 1GB Graphics/4GB ram pants down (run everything on low/ultra low and still get only 20FPS)

I am using the 6tb for storage. Mostly video files.

That is the exact video card I am using. Runs quiet and has very nice power consumption rates both at idle and under load. Mine even gave me some headroom to overclock it even further than it comes. EVGA provides some fantastic overclocking software I'd really recommend. You're power supply is overkill but it leaves room to add more cards in the future.

EVGA is pretty good to work with, just make sure you register your card with them asap, upload your purchase receipt etc just in case you have to have any service done.

The Ram is way overkill for gaming, but if you're doing a lot of video encoding (witch sounds like you might be with all those video files) you would be putting it to better use than most of us.

The processor is solid, and your case is big enough for you to put some serious cooling solutions in without worry. I'd get it up around 4.5-4.8 for a stable 24/7 level, but it may vary depending on the luck of the draw with your chip. Also I've never done any overclocking with that particular line of motherboards, so you'll have to read up and see where you can squeeze some performance out of your rig.

Enjoy your new machine bud :)

Posting this from my new PC!

The build went pretty well. It took about 5-1/2 hours from opening boxes to powering on to install OS. I had several issues that could have been avoided had I paid closer attention to instructions on things (had to take the motherboard off after installing it 3 times, and 2 times on CPU cooler)...

That being said, however, it booted up first try and so far I can't find any issues other than I forgot to plug in one of the case fan LED's (fan itself is working, just not light) and I wouldn't have used that anyway.

This was my first experience with overclocking a processor (so far have only been able to get reference clock up to about ~104.. someone who knows about overclocking should give me some pointers) and it's also my first experience with putting hard drives into a RAID configuration. That was super easy and is working very well. Boot time is incredibly fast.

I took some pictures, but they were with my iPhone, so the quality isn't the best, and I'm certainly no photographer.

I used my kitchen as a temporary work space to put the computer together, so what you're seeing is certainly not where I would normally use the computer.

So far all stress tests and benchmarks have been good. I'll be doing more gaming benchmarks over the next few days as I get things installed.

Instead of posting a bunch of pictures here, I uploaded them to Photobucket. Here's the link: http://photobucket.com/colossuspc

I always struggle with coming up with PC names, and instead of naming it "Josh-PC" like my last one, I named it Colossus (because it's effing huge..)

Has been a fun experience, looking forward to testing it out!
