Looking to get a new computer
« on: Dec 21, 2012, 11:20 AM »
Well I have nothing else to spend money on for Christmas so I decided its time to update my computer. I was hoping that some of you guys that know alot about gaming computers/etc could help me put something together that will perform nicely. I'm willing to spend about 600 dollars. I was hoping you guys might be able to suggest some hardware for me. I'm not the most knowledgeable about top end computers so any help would be great. Thanks

Could we have some details like what you are deciding to upgrade? Video card, memory, CPU etc..?

I've built this computer for about 5 people and use it myself at work to play SWTOR.  Keep in mind this is almost a year old now, but it gives you an idea as to what you need.

If you are looking to play SWTOR like a champ, this game LOVES CPU.  So i would upgrade to at least 6 cores for this game.  If you're looking for all around gaming, you should have a high end video card and at least 6 cores.

Other than that.....a rule of thumb to live by when trying to build a top end machine on a budget is don't buy anything you aren't going to use.  For example, if you don't have a surround sound speaker set, don't spend the money on a motherboard that has 5.1 built into it.  If you don't need 4-5 PCI Express slots....don't buy a Motherboard that has them.  The motherboard I use on this custom built pc supports 2 slots..and I only use the video card slot.

On a 600 dollar budget I would pass on the SSD hard drive.  The OS runs faster but you don't see that much of an increase when it comes to gaming (Insert SSD HD and gaming theorycrafting here).

In terms just going to dell.com to buy a computer, you can do that but you aren't going to get the biggest bang for your buck there.  There are a lot of places that offer promotions on stuff, like Microcenter usually offers 20-50 bucks off a mother board when you purchase a processor.

I don't think you need an i7 core processor or anything, because that's going to eat through your entire budget.  If you are dead set on  having it though, buy the processor & mb together then just save up some more money for the rest of the PC.  The processor & video card are giong nto be the biggest costs of your computer.

Another nice thing about building it yourself is that you can get the look that you want.  You have an entire internets of options in terms of a chassis for your computer.

**************

This is through Microcenter (www.microcenter.com). Don’t know if you have one of those around you, but I think you can get the same deals online. The reason you want to go with these guys is because of the motherboard & processor bundle deal which saves you 40 bucks.

Phenom II x4 OEM Phenom II x4 B93 - 69.99 ( I have a Phenom II x6 1045T which is 99.99)

ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus AM3+ ATX Mother board - 14.99 (You save 40 dollars because you are buying the processor. This bundle deal is still going on as of June. Similar deal for Intel board & proc)

Diablotek Chassis with 450w Power supply – 39.99 (If you already have a chassis....you are going to be spending 40 bucks on a 450w power supply anyways. Just spring for a new chassis with a built in PS)

2x 4 Gb DDR3 RAM - 39.99

Radeon HD 6450 1 GB DDR3 PCIe 2.1 Low-Profile Video card – 44.99 SWTOR Eats CPU, not GPU. Video card does not matter on this game as much as people think. This card works great.

Artic Silver Thermal Paste - 4.99 (You need this to put on your processor when you attach the heat sink...don't worry, it's not scary. Youtube it. Very easy)

Just slap a 7200 RPM Hard drive in there that you already have. If not, you can just shell out 40 bucks for a 250 Gb drive.

Total Cost for Quad Core AMD Box not including hard drive & dvd drive: $215
Total Cost for Six Core AMD Box (My box): $240

Comments:

-You do not need any additional fans in the chassis if you keep it simple and don't overclock anything. If you start overclocking and putting in a huge video card and you bought a bigger MB, you will need to throw in some additional cooling. I have had my box running over 2 months non stop and it hasn't come close to over heating or having any heat issues.

-The motherboard only has 2 Dimm slots, but if you are just going for a decent and cheap gaming box, 8 gb of ram is PLENTY. If you are building something to last you a few years, I would get the next MB up, which I think is like 25 bucks with the 40 dollar discount.

-SSD Hard drives are amazing and you will see a little better performance, but would rather you spend money on a better processor. SSD’s are still 100 bucks for 90gb, which is absurd. RL Theorycrafting is still going on about SSD life & gaming.

-I have been running the game FLAWLESSLY on the six core box for 2 months. Honestly, it runs almost just as good as my i7 12 gb at home.
