Gaming keyboard?
« on: Dec 06, 2011, 09:54 PM »
Hey again, to finish off my gaming setup, I only have a keyboard left to buy.  I was hoping to get your feedback on keyboards you have and why you think its a good deal.  I'm looking at this one because of the good price and the functionality it provides is on par with some very expensive keyboards.  I am worried about the size of the keys though.  It seems like thinner keys would be more efficient when milliseconds actually matter.

Thanks!

EDIT: maybe this one?

Mechanical keys > all. Logitech doesn't make anything with mechanical keys which is my number one gripe with them. Their customer service can be excellent, however. Ask Topi about his free replacement headset.

For the same price as your second one, this. The one problem with mechanical keys is that if you ever use a non-mechanical keyboard after getting used to mechanical, you'll miss because you won't be pushing the keys down far enough.

Slight necro, but if anyone is still looking for a gaming keyboard I just got this one and it's on sale right now:

Corsair Vengeance K90

It has a $20 mail in rebate, and I have kept it in my wishlist and newegg just sent me this promotional code for 20% off, which took 26 bucks off the total.   Incredible deal for one of the best keyboards on the market.

Code:   EMCNFNG232    Expires 4/9/2012 but might be a special code for me alone, not sure.

Keyboards sort of came up again, so...

Cherry switch samplers:
Red, black, blue, brown w/ o-rings:
http://www.maxkeyboard.com/max-keyboard-keycap-cherry-mx-switch-o-ring-sampler-kit.html

Red, black, blue, brown, clear w/ o-rings and various keycap color samples:
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-sampler-kit.html

Red, black, blue, brown, clear, green:
http://www.qwerkeys.co.uk/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=75&product_id=180

Can't find a sampler for Topre switches, but if you have some cash lying around:
http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf104&pid=xf11t0

If you have mx switches you want to change out, you can pop them of if they're PCB mounted. If they're plate mounted, you have to de-solder them, so... There's that.

You can get them from Mouser (mouser.com) or DigiKey (digikey.com) for $0.80 to $1.60 a piece, depending on type.

Reading an MX series part code:
Ex: MX1A-11NW
MX: Switch series. Always MX.
1: Contact material. Almost always 1. 5 is special order direct from Cherry. (1 is Silver/Gold 10mA/12V max)
A: Contact configuration: Almost always A. C is special order direct from Cherry. (A is SPST)
-: dash is a dash
1: Operating Characteristics, Actuating Force and Key Style
  • 1: Black
  • 2: Gray (intended as spacebar switch for blacks)
  • 3: Lock (locking switch for old style caps lock)
  • A: White
  • B: Gray (intended as spacebar switch for whites)
  • C: Clear
  • D: Gray (intended as spacebar switch for clears)
  • E: Blue
  • F: Green (intended as spacebar switch for blues)
  • G: Brown
  • L: Red

1: Key system. Always 1.
N: LED / diode
  • N: Nothing
  • R: Red LED, No diode
  • G: Green LED, No diode
  • Y: Yellow LED, with diode
  • D: No LED, with diode
  • J: With Jumper Wire, no LED, no diode

W: PCB Mounting Pins
  • N: No pins (plate mount)
  • W: Pins (PCB mount)

The switches and springs are all interchangeable in the MX series which means you can combine the various weight and switch styles into things that don't exist.

Yummy hardware based key remapping.

Also still selling mine if you're interested, although I think the one Crabbok posted is better.
