Sticker Tank spec
« on: Jul 07, 2014, 02:00 AM »
With nanofield sharing GCD with everything else our threat generation has really taken a hit. I've found a spec that seems to work well for me:
http://ws-base.com/builds/generator/stalker#QppKvKsKvvKvnvK/804.805.806.819.820.821.943.944.945.818.831.822.827.844.845.846.825.946.947.948.777.778.779.793.794.795

I've scrounged all this from various discussions and guides:

T8 Nanofield
T8  Whiplash
T5 Decimate
T1 Nano Virus
T1 Steadfast
T1 Razor Storm (for trash) or T1 Razor Disk (for bosses)
T1 Collapse
T1 Stagger

Open with a NF > Steadfast > Nano Virus > NF dump
Hopefully at this point you've proc'ed Decimate
NF Dump
Whiplash

at this point it is a cycle. I do not do a NF dump unless I am at 1/3 suit power. I follow this general priority:
1) Decimate up: hit it
2) Steadfast up: hit it
3) Suit power above 1/3: NF Dump
4) Nano Virus up: hit it
5) Whiplash

For gearing / runing I used the following as a rough rule of thumb:
Support Power > Tech > Armor > Max Health / Grit*  / Shield Capacity > Insight** > Deflect
* I only rune for grit if I am close to a mile stone. In general you will get more life from straight max health
** I only rune for  insight if I am close to a mile stone and below 15% crit hit or below 20% deflect.

Support power is the biggest boost to TPS.
Tech gives us 0.37 Support Power per point, with demising returns at 1680

I've done something odd with rune sets
[4] Preservation: Increases Max Health by 435 and grants a 10% chance to restore 114 health when you land a hit. Can only occur every 5.00s.  - Yes, tiny heal, but all our reactive heals are tiny. And 435 health. You have to put something in that water slot
[4] Protect your Neck: Increases Armor by 128 and grants Defense for 5.0s when you drop below 30% health. Defense: Increases Armor by 830. Can only occur every 30.00s.
[4] Shield Specialist: Increases Max Shield by 860 and reduces your Shield Reboot Time by 1.00s.
and this is where it gets weird:
[4] Technophile: Increases Technology Damage Dealt by 1% and grants a 10% chance to apply an Expose for 5.0s when you land a hit. Expose: Reduces Technology Resistance by X.
Here are my reasons:
1) We will be socketing for tech anyway
2) Nothing else spectacular for fire slots
3) only requires 4 sockets.

I have a 2nd spec around Bloodthirst spec I'll post later

Unless you are dying... I would suggest dropping Nano Virus.  Prep or punish will increase your threat a lot more.  Or something like reaver on pounce based on the fight for utility.

Nope.

There is a bug where punish eats your decimates. So that is a no no. Plus it triggers on crits and scales with assault power, both of which we lack in tank stance.

for single target threat Nano Virus is very nice. It hits for just about the same as two hits of NF, is really cheap, and scales really well with support power.

Assuming threat is your limiting factor.  The SP generation from Prep or Punish outweighs what you gain from Nano Virus.  I'm not the biggest fan of Punish but it does provide a decent SP return.  Also, as long as you use Decimate on cooldown the risk of a crit erasing the Decimate proc is very low.

From a defensive standpoint I really haven't even looked at crit severity numbers.  Obviously when not deflect crit capped it's going to provide a benefit... but then you have to compare that to the gains from Prep, or really any other defensive ability (stim drone, amp spike, nano dart).  That's a lot of numbers that I think are a lot less relevant currently since death is much less of a concern.

The last thing I'd say is that when self healing isn't as important (or when DPS is extremely important) you should try Frenzy.  You need to be able to dump it though using Sprint tapping/strafe.

There are several reason Nano Virus is a more favorable choice. First, it scales well with support power. With 1630 support power my Nano Field hits for 1179, mean while my nano virus hits for 2115. NF costs 20 energy (no cooldown), Nano Field costs 10 (5s cooldown).

NanoVirus is almost double the threat but half the cost of NanoField every 5 seconds.

Punish is on a 7 second cool down and hits for only 1510. In addition it requires you to crit. In tanking gear my crit is only 8.93%. The energy you would receive using it below 35 suit power would allow you to roll one NF, shich is less damage than 1 NanoVirus at half the cost.

Survivability is not an issue, and even it was, to get the full benefit of preparation you need to channel it, which is a lot down time to not be hitting, or you click and get the benefit of a single tick, which nets 36 suit power, but again allowing you to roll one NF, which is less damage than 1 NanoVirus at half the cost.

Threat is the main goal. Frenzy is a trap. The tool tip makes it look like it would be superior threat but in practice it generates far less threat than a nanofield build. This video illustrates why well:

The other thing NanoVirus is great for is moments of opportunity. The mob is stunned. Your group is doing bonus damage. Major part of our threat, Decimate, is useless because you aren't getting a procs to trigger it.

Overall, I find my threat cycle higher, and much more consistent using this rotation.

Might be worth going into more numbers here at some point.  I'll leave it for now.  Off topic I do really want to try Nano Virus in a double support stalker arena.

I will say that with Frenzy, you have to ignore any numbers where someone channels the cast.  Hold to cast, strafe, tap sprint.  You can dump all your SP in about a second which is night and day to full channels.  I've seen that guys video before and he is either misspeaking or confused about what mitigation is... He also full channels frenzy in his test.

Now that we have had a few forays into raiding, I have continued to explore and experiment with my builds. The optional boss, in particular, is going to take a different build than the normal because of the eggs. Skills like Nano Field, Decimate, and Razor Storm are off the table.

I had been testing some narrow telegraph build, all of which are built around Frenzy. I also wanted to test the use of punish along with it. I still find Nano Field to be the superior threat generator in general, but what I found with Nano Virus vs Punish caused me to actually take Punish in some situations.

In my previous build I was sitting at around 9% crit. At that crit rate, what I found was Punish was not up on cool down often enough. Because survivability has been a non-issue, In my new builds I try to move points to places that allow for more threat over mitigation. This included picking up an additional 6% crit from the assault tree:

new general build
http://ws-base.com/builds/generator/stalker#rvqppvMsKvvKqvr/804.805.806.819.820.821.943.944.945.818.822.827.844.845.846.904.825.770.771.772.793.794.795.946.947.948

After doing, that I am at around 15% crit unbuffed and I am finding Punish works well, with one caveat: Punish procs eat Decimate procs. Decimate generates great threat and reduces damage the target does by 10% (15% at tier 4), so this sucks. But it is something they have stated they are fixing. What I've done to compensate for this is to wait for the Punish proc before I use Steadfast, as Steadfast generally triggers a Decimate.

End result: even though Nano Virus, for me, hits for 700 more damage at around 15% crit, as Nike said, Punish becomes a better alternative.

Glad to see you are switching it up a bit.  Is someone always using T8 frenzy?  18% Physical damage is pretty huge.

Oh I am constantly testing and comparing builds :) I bought the 3rd action set so I could test amp layouts and action sets. Right now I am at 13 sassy builds for different scenarios.

I am planning on running it tonight, though I fear what another +18% damage is going to do for dps stalker and warrior threat  ;D

One annoying issue is that currently the debuff does not show up on the mob. This is something they are/have fixed and have yet to roll out.
