I want a new Graphics Card..
« on: Oct 15, 2012, 10:05 AM »
so i've got a new HD, a new monitor but I am still unhappy with my Graphics Card.

Here is my Windows Experience Index rating:
Processor: 7.3
RAM: 7.3
Grahics (Desktop): 4.6
Graphics (Gaming): 6.1
Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

I currently use an ATI Radeon HD 5450
my FPS in game is usually ALWAYS in Red. Which I think means either my graphics or processor are bottle necking each other.
MY processor is the AMD Core2 Q6600 oc'd to 3Ghz

My budget is $120.

What can I get for this budget?
I ask you guys since my knowledge on PC parts is pretty bad, lol.
I have never ever really had a good graphics card tbh..

For $120 you are kinda limiting yourself. But you could still get away with something like this:

for a bit extra..with a rebate:

Don't buy anything yet... You need to know these things

Does your mobo have a  pci-e x16 slot I hope??

How big is your power supply now?

Does your power supply have an additional 4pin adapter power for a video card?

At 120, i'd say your best bet is the gtx 650, or potentially the Radeon HD 7770.

Here is a good article on a roundup of best bang for your buck graphics cards at several price points.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html

tom's is a reliable site that does a wide range of testing on graphics cards, so I would trust their analysis.

It looks like the sweet spot for price performance is right around 200 bucks, but even if you could do 150 or so, the new GTX 650 ti puts out some really nice frame rates even at larger resolutions, as long as you are willing to sacrifice some extra eye candy like high levels of AA.

The other factor is getting it in the UK as well, i know prices can swing widely depending on where in the world you are.

I was going to make similar recommendations but if his PSU is shitty or doesn't have power adapters for the video card then he will be spending his money for nothing...

Yup, turbo is 100% right, you have to make sure you're power supply has enough juice, and the right pin connectors (though a lot of cards will come with power pin adapters)

If he's got a q6600 that's probably something like the the p35 or x38 chipset on the motherboard, which would be a 1x16 1x4 or 2x16 configuration for the pci-e respectively. the p35 would mean that SLI/Crossfire wouldn't be an option, but at 120, that option is out the window anyway.

Civ if you've got a power supply that is at least 400-450 watts you should have enough power for the types of graphics cards we're talking about here. Usually it will say what it is on a sticker right on the power supply if you aren't sure.

Thanks guys :)

I just checked.
my PSU is 450w & It does have the 4pin cable you speak of.

my mobo is an abit ip 35pro, which supports PCI-E (which my current card is)

I can up my budget past $120 if my current card and a new card wouldnt REALLy provide much of a difference.. but $150 would be okay I guess.

atm everything is on low/ultra low and my FPS is in red.. I used to play on 1440x980(I think?) and now I run 1920x1080 with my new monitor.

I dont need everything on high/max with AA and stuff, just would prefer my FPS not to be in red as my game is really jumpy at times.

£100 is roughly $160

What i would do civ, is look up some performance charts, and find the best performing card you can afford that is also available through a local outlet.

Computer hardware is often more expensive by a wide margin outside the US.

  • I would put something here, but it's too personal.

FYI - the number of amps (more is better) on the power supply's 12v rail (and the number of rails... Fewer is better) is actually more important than the total wattage. The efficiency of the power supply is important too... An 85+ 450w is better than a generic brand 550w most times.

I use a Radeon HD 6670.. They can be had cheap, have low power requirements, don't require additional 4pin support and I get good performance in SWTOR at 1440x900 with most of the graphics options high.

Shipping out of the US is stupid because you're going to wait for 2+ weeks and it likely won't be that different in price. Fuck the mid-mid range Civ and go for something you won't feel like you need to upgrade in 2 years.
