Final Fantasy X HD
« on: Mar 16, 2014, 09:17 PM »
I'm going to be playing Final Fantasy X HD starting on Tuesday or Wednesday. The intention is to stream the whole shebang. I expect from start to Penance's death to take about 150 hours, though having had trouble with certain mini-games in the past, there could be quite a bit of variation in that estimate.

Unfortunately the HD version does not come with the option to use Japanese audio, so that won't be happening. Yuna's horrible attempts at trying to lip-sync English to Japanese will still be present. (Yay?)

The main goal is to beat Penance. Side goal is to let my OCD run wild. All the celestials, character and Aeon stats maxed (HP/MP 9,999/999 since BHPL is stupid and BMPL is worthless), extra magic weapons for Yuna and Lulu (BDL, Booster, One MP, Magic +20%), Ribbon for everyone (just becauseā€”I know ribbon is silly beyond two chars), Penance armor for Tidus, Wakka and Rikku, Master Thief armor for <someone>, good armor for everyone (Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Potion, Auto-Phoenix). Complete overdrives for everyone. Remodel the sphere grid in the least number of steps (no BHPL or BMPL should make that easy). Don't reset Blitzball (unless something disastrous and unrecoverable occurs). Max out Blitzball team. I'm sure there are other things that are slipping my mind at the moment.

First goal is to get to the airship, though there is a rather large backtrack I intend to do before that. I want to grab a couple of things after beating Spherimorph but before going past Rin's in Macalania, so I will be turning around and walking all the way back to Besaid. (And then back, obviously.) This is the only time to do it as afterwards, it's impossible to pass through Guadosalam without activating Dark Aeons, and Dark Aeons bar the path to things (and blitzers) I want.

I'll expand on this thread as it goes. There may be arithmetic.

Blitzball Rough Plan
Too keep from trading out too many players...

LF: Tidus
RF: Vilucha (Besaid)
MF: Linna (Macalania)
LD: Shuu (Luca Cafe)
RD: Ropp (Mi'hen Travel Agency)
GL: Jumal (Luca Square)

Shuu needs to be replaced, probably by Kulukan if she ever becomes available. Alternatively by Zev Ronso if he levels up (past 70).
Jumal needs to be replaced, probably by Nimrook if he ever becomes available. Alternatively by Wedge if he levels up (past 70).
Linna can be replaced (or augmented) by Vuroja. Linna is more offensive, Vuroja is more all-around.
Tidus can be replaced by Larbeight.

Brother makes Blitzball before level 60 double plus boring.

What times during the day do you mostly stream?

In the 10am-10pm (Pacific) time frame. If I can, I'll slant more interesting things towards the evening (5pm+) and do things like lightning dodging and chocobo racing during the day. (Which would be boring, unless you want to watch me throw controllers at small animals.)

The play through of the base game should take between 11-16 hours, depending on how side tracked I get. After that it's grindalicious. I'll be picking up blitzball players along the way, but won't be playing until post Airship since I want to start with Linna and Blitzball is disabled for a while in that time frame.

If the above is a bit greek... The 'base game' consists of the original North American release which has been speedrun in about 10 hours (9 hours and change segmented). It includes the entire story of the game. The 'extra' content was included in the International edition which was never released in North America and therefore required a modded playstation or swapmagic to play. It has a bunch of optional 'super' bosses--the dark aeons and Penance--which require an obscene amount of grinding in order to defeat (without paying Yojimbo to Zanmato everything).

I guess the tl;dr is in the beginning, evenings. After the base game is pretty much over (there is a point of no return past the last save sphere in the game), it turns into a grindfest, so then times will be whenever I have the patience to do the current task.

I'll let you know what I'm planning as things go. Currently I'm thinking about starting tomorrow around 5pm and hopefully going until I kill Spherimorph. Then I'll backtrack during the day (the following day) and do a little nonsense with the intent of getting back to Spherimorph and waiting until 5pm to progress the story again. If I don't start tomorrow (for whatever reason--I have a website I need to create a paid membership system for) then I'll start Wednesday night at around 5pm with the same plan.

I didn't get anywhere near as far as I intended... I must have forgotten how long things actually take--or I was accelerating things last time on an emulator.

Anyway. In Luca, right before the first Blitzball match. I should be able to get to Spherimorph tomorrow unless I really misremember things.

Made two minor mistakes. Forgot to hit a save sphere and ran out of mana on Wakka. The other was that I hasted Lullu twice becasue Iw asn't paying attention to the memory cursor. I also had a couple of hiccups where my memory wasn't quite right (getting one of Lulu's spells absorbed, for instance.)

The major problem I'm having is that I'm slow because I'm used to playing the Japanese version which means the X and O buttons are reversed, so I'm constantly hitting the wrong button, especially in menus. It seems to be improving, though.

On the game itself: It's awkward seeing updated high poly faces next to original low poly faces without updated textures. Especially in close ups. The eyes on the updated models are weird. Eerie. Something. There's also this horrible yellow static showing up in dream sequences and flashbacks which replaces the old pale fog--which there was nothing wrong with. The static is fucking annoying.

The sound in game--the music, I mean--is strange at times. They've basically taken the original music and added some extra phrases with new instruments underneath. It's not bad, it's just a bit different and at times, overdone.

So far it is the international version. The sphere grids are the Standard and Expert versions, not the Regular North American version. Meaning that the Extract skills are there, for instance.

The blitzball kid is also still the blitzball kid. He continues to dream of being a blitzball when he grows up.

The first four hours are up on Twitch and it's at least 90% cutscenes...
