I can only imagine the stuff people are making is ridiculous...they should just round up all the inappropriate shit and name the first expansion "Everquest Next: Mists of Penis Island".

  • If it's free, I'll buy it for $100!

I dunno if it's because I don't have all the time in the world or what, but I'm not sure how I feel about this game.

Mining seems dumb.   If you dig down in the dirt, you'll only ever find dirt.  You never find anything else.   All the rare minerals are sitting on top of the ground.  It's like harvesting in EQ2 more than mining.  And you need a TON of stuff to make the next tier of pickaxe to mine the Tier 2 stuff.

Oh and that $100 pickaxe I bought that was supposed to be the best mining tool in the game?   Yeah it's only the best STARTING item... IE it only can harvest the entry level crap.

Now the graphics are awesome, the building tools seems a bit buggy, as only 1 of the 3 you start with seem to actually work, but it's just alpha i'll give them time to fix all the rest of the bugs.  The thing has potential... but I was really hoping to be able to mine.

They've actually mentioned this several times after they took heat for Pay to Win from the founder's pack.  Those items also will not transition to the actual EQ:N game either, they are landmark-only.  frankly i think they are fucking themselves with the bad press this alpha will generate but... it's a Sony!  What can you expect?

With the end of alpha and the start of closed beta on the 26th, if any founders pack buyers have a spare cbt key i'd love to check it out.

So having "played" this for a week or so now...

Not enough claims. You can have one base claim and two additional claims. The one base claim is fine, but the two additional ones is bogus. I need 12 additional claims minimum to build a small castle that doesn't look stupid. There is a huge buffer zone around base claims where other people cannot claim space, so it's not an interference issue. Each additional claim also incurs additional upkeep, and while that's not a limiting issue at the moment, it certainly discourages people from claiming more than they use which could interfere with the availability of resources as no one can mine/chop/gather inside of claims. (Including your own. You can't mine on your own claim. Which makes me think they should change the name.)

Building is great. Marrying voxels can be annoying, but there are ways around it if you have a bit of patience to deal with micro-voxels, anti-voxels and zero data voxels.

Smoothing sucks. They changed the smooth tool so that what used to take 5 clicks to do now takes 1. It's far too aggressive.

The select tool is handy, but limited to cuboids. This is a bit annoying when you'd like to cut on an angle.

The line tool doesn't support 1 voxel strings. If you want small things on an angle you have to do it very carefully, by hand, one sub-voxel at a time. (That is, after you create the appropriate sub-voxel in the first place.)

Since everything basically exist in a 90 degree world, you have to create at least a quarter of what you want to make when doing rounded surfaces. There is no 'circle' tool, so creating a round tower means creating a quarter of the circular wall by hand using a circle map from one of the minecraft voxel sites. (Like: http://oranj.io/blog/VoxelSphereGenerator )

Creating a large tower with smooth walls and no bad marriages to something like an internal staircase requires four times the cross sectional area of the tower itself: You need a zero data map, a smoothed version, a zerodata married to a smoothie and then a decent sized chunk of the married zero data so you don't have to build the tower on voxel layer at a time. This is annoying because of the issue with limited claims--I have one claim that is basically a workshop for building things on the other two claims.

They are adding monsters, PvP, caves (and all minerals will be moving underground with that change), oceans, lakes, rivers, controllable dynamic water, etc... So the game looks like it's going to continue to get more interesting. At the moment, though, it's a fun thing to goof off with for a little bit, but is lacking in garnering continuing interest.

I got so bored with Alpha I haven't even logged in since it went into closed beta.   Glad I spent that 100 bucks for nothing.   Jeesus I'm stupid as fuck sometimes.

I have been enjoying it so far... but im still in the tool/crafting station grind.  I really want to see what happens when they add the mobs and things.

The real question is: How many mithril picks (and rubicite axes) do you have to craft to get the legendary one with the stats you want on it?

ijs.

I got bored and I suck at legos, but damn grapple hooking around is/was rad. I am probably retired from pc gaming until EQNext. Wildstar beta was just meh, who knows maybe I will change my mind about it since I have months before it even comes out.
