WINNER! Submission: Gash
« on: Nov 04, 2011, 02:29 AM »
This is what came to mind, so i just ran with it. I don't know if it 'fits' with the character of our community per se, but I think it turned out to my liking.

I'm not 100% sold on the gradient fill, I could just substitute the number '50' mid way up the syringe, I just don't think it would scale quite as well at smaller sizes, the 50 might get lost.

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger, eh?

I like the syringe--you've tapped into a piece of my brain. I was considering a skull and crossbones logo for a while with two crossed syringes instead of bones. One was going to be half full and one was going to be spent with the needle bent. I was having trouble with getting the half full one to look right because of the angles--something about it bothered me. I still have the primitives around here somewhere, and I'll see if I can't dig them up.

I'm not a fan of the open areas inside the lettering, partly because of reduction issues. I'm not sure I really have a better suggestion... So there's that. It probably also has to do with the fact that I don't really like serifs either. Personal opinion, of course.

Having the syringe facing down with a drop coming off the needle might be hotness. Also, you might want to separate the syringe out into another graphic that can be used for smaller things, especially if you keep the lettering complex.

Thanks for the feed back.

The reason I went with the serifs is that it mimicked the needle in a way. Sort of a "dangerous no matter what angle you came at us" idea there.

I toyed with the idea of fitting 50 into the open space in the D as well, or shrinking the D. I'll play with it and see what happens.

I had another idea that I flushed out, but I'll throw that up as a second submission.

We'll get it right one way or the other, no worries ^_^

The other thing I was thinking about was having the syringe in a dudes arm with the heroin veins spelling out LD50 but it was kind tricky to keep it simple and legible.

Think this is worth trying to make work? or a little too gruesome for a public facing logo?

Thanks again for the input folks.

You might be able to convey the same concept with a sharp bevel on the lettering or change the interior white on one of the letters to use the neg space in the middle of an old razorblade.

I'm not sure that you could convey it well without keeping big... ie. it wouldn't reduce well at all. It's probably not too gruesome, but implying gruesome instead of spelling it out can be more effective. If it's just a syringe, the contents are whatever suits the viewer's own personal demons, whereas if you have it along with track marks, then it pretty much has to be heroin in everyone's mind.
