The How To's
How to submit an entry
  • You must have registered an account on the forum in order to post.
  • To submit an entry, open the submission forum and click the new topic button.
  • Under the post area you will find an area where you can attach your submissions. You may attach up to four images at a time (by clicking: (more attachments)), but please only attach items for one concept per post. If you have multiple concepts, then please make more than one topic.
  • More info

How to inline an image attachment
  • When posting, find this in the "Attach" area:
  • If you use preview when using inline attachments, there will be a placeholder displayed. Your images are not uploaded to the server until you hit submit.
  • Occasionally it takes some time (30 seconds) to upload attachments. This is normal behavior. The server checks attachments for malicious things, but it does this at a relatively low priority.
  • There's more than a few options for inlining image attachments. Hit the question mark next to the selector box when posting for more details, or click here

The FAQ's
Why can't I use Photoshop?
  • Because I said so. Vector graphics are easier to work with. Especially when we make t-shirts and thongs.
  • If there were some absolutely amazing, drop dead incredible logo done in Photoshop (or GIMP or what-have-you), I might buy it for the site, but it's not eligible to win the contest. Especially since I'd have to spend the time turning it into a vector.
Vector graphics are too limited!

The Rules
  • The contest will consist of two phases
  • Open Phase - Ends November 6, 2011 at 23:59 EST
This is the initial part of the contest and we will be accepting all submissions. Submissions must be in no later than November, 2011 at 23:59 EST. Any submissions posted after that time will not be considered.
  • Top 5 Phase - Begins November 8, 2011 at 00:01 EST and ends on November 15, 2011 at 23:59 EST
In this phase, the designers of our five favorite submissions from the Open Phase can submit revisions or completely new designs. The winner will be chosen from this group.
  • The Top 5 Phase participants will be announced no later than November 7, 2011 at 23:59 EST.
  • The winner will be announced no later than November 18, 2011 at 23:59 EST.

  • You will have to register for a forum account as you will have to submit via posting to the submission thread
  • We will request you real name and shipping address if you win so that we can send you your prize and to facilitate the transfer of copyright. After that is complete, your personal information will be erased. At no time will we share your information with anyone.
  • LD50 Privacy Policy

  • There are several threads that concern the contest, as follow:
  • The thread you are currently reading. This thread contains the announcement of the contest and the contest rules. This thread is open for comment on the contest announcement and the contest rules.
  • Submission threads. Submission threads are controlled by their creator. This means that the topic starter can delete any negative or non-constructive post made in the thread. Submission threads are for constructive and positive discourse about the submission only.
  • The ranking thread. This is possibly the most important thread. The first post contains the criteria of what we're looking for and the current top five submissions. This thread is only open for comment by members of LD50. It is for constructive feedback on current submissions and for daily tracking of the current favorites.

  • Use a vector graphics editor (Illustrator, Corel Draw, InkScape, etc.)
  • Must be an original work of art.
  • No clipart, even if you have purchased a user license for said clip art. The license is not transferable.
  • No tracing (hand or automatic) of internet content or photography. The sole exception to this rule is if you own FULL copyrights to the image and have not used it before and agree to not use it again.
  • You may submit multiple times, but limit your submission to one concept at a time. Do not attach four different concepts to one post.
  • Submissions should be no larger than 512px X 512px.
  • There should be no watermarks on submissions.
  • The image should be centered horizontally and vertically with a reasonable amount of whitespace all around.
  • Submissions must be in PNG, JPG or GIF format.
  • Backgrounds are allowed, but not recommended. If you're submitting using an image type that does not support transparency, stick with a dark background in line with the website's theme.
  • You are allowed to submit revisions until the end of the current phase
  • We may remove entries without notice if they violate the submission rules.

  • You will not comment on other people's submissions in the submission thread.
  • You are responsible for making sure that your entries are significantly different from existing entries in the contest.

LD50 Responsibilities (we, our)
  • During the contest we will provide a daily ranking of our current favorite designs.
  • We will provide feedback on submissions commensurate with the effort put into the individual submissions. Entering early guarantees lots of feedback from the people who will be choosing the winner.

  • Designers own all rights to their design entries on this site, and can withdraw them at any time, unless a design has won a project and the designer has been paid for it.
  • Copyright ownership is only transferred to the Client when the winning designer has been paid for.
  • If you suspect your work has been clearly plagiarized please send the offending designer a private message to deal with the issue directly. Alternately, you could post a message in the discussion thread to get some opinions from others. Please be polite. Understand that similarities can be unintentional.
  • After the contest is over, we would like to keep your submissions on display in the original thread. If you would like to add a watermark at that time, please feel free. If you want us to watermark your image for you, we would be more than happy to. You can, of course, remove your submission at any time.

The Prize
  • You will receive the pre-order code upon winning the conest.
  • You will not receive the box until or shortly after Dec 20, 2011
  • The winner will have to provide the following in order to claim the prize:
    • 1280px wide PNG with a transparent background
    • EPS or AI file with fonts converted to outlines
    • Transfer of copyright of the logo and any associated images used in the production of the logo.
  • You will grant us right to use the winning image until you receive the box, at which point you will transfer copyright to us.
  • If you don't want the Collector's Edition, you may substitute one item of equal or lesser value ($150 US)
  • The substitute item must be available for sale or pre-order from Best Buy at the time that the prize is awarded.
  • International Caveat (Non US): The prize can be shipped internationally, but this is a two step process, so the prize will arrive later than if shipped domestically. Further, the prize can not be awarded to a resident of any country that it is currently prohibited for a resident of the United States (US) to do business with. Alternate prizes which include technology regulated for sale outside the US are subject to those regulations and will not be available as an alternative.

  • These rules may be amended if issues arise that are not covered.
  • Amendments will not lower the value of the prize.
  • Amendments will not change deadlines.

Submit early!
This is somewhat counter-intuitive when compared with other similar contests. Here are some reasons:
  • Feedback. We will give feedback during the contest which can help you develop your idea further. You aren't limited to entering only one final concept. You can modify your entry as you see fit up until the deadline. The earlier you enter your idea, the more feedback is available to you.
  • First come, first copyright. If there are two concepts that are eerily similar, the first one submitted owns the right to the concept. Derivative works will not be considered for the competition.

Keep it simple
  • Try to imagine your concept as a shoulder patch/insignia. We are probably going to use the winner in order to help brand ourselves.
  • If that doesn't work, try to imagine your concept on a thong.

The following small dimensions (in pixels) might be useful in your thinking
  • twitter: 128x128, 48x48, 20x20
  • facebook: 180x180, 50x50, 32x32, 16x16
  • favicon: 16x16
  • this site: 90x90, 65x65, 50x50, 40x40, 20x20
  • max sig height: 128 width: 512
